As the week draws to a close, we take a look at Campylobacter, a strain of bacteria which has taken centre stage in this year’s Food Safety Week as the UK’s most common cause of foodborne illness.

The FSA are strongly advising members of the public to stop washing raw chicken before cooking it as part of their Food Safety Week focus, as this is likely to spread harmful bacteria. 44% of people make this mistake, and put themselves at risk of contracting Campylobacter.
Did you know…
• More than 280,000 people suffer from Campylobacter poisoning in Britain each year
• It is thought to be attributed to over 100 deaths each year
• It causes more cases of foodborne illness than Salmonella and E.Coli combined

At least 65% of chickens sold to UK consumers between May 2007 and September 2008 were reportedly contaminated with Campylobacter.

Shoe covers; are they really necessary? Do they successfully control floor-level contamination?
While shoe covers certainly have their place in the cleanroom environment, many end users may be surprised to discover that they are using a shoe cover which is not only inappropriate for their environment, but is a more expensive product than a better suited alternative.
What’s the cost?
The cost of shoe covers can vary greatly, and if you’re of an organisation which aspires for quality items, shoe covers can impact greatly on company budgets.
Quality or quantity?
While many shoe cover manufacturers claim good traction, waterproofing, durability and contamination control properties in their product, the materials typically used to produce them (chlorinated polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC) all have inherent weaknesses which can cause risk to your critical environment.
What are the risks?
● Shoe covers are usually made from a non-woven material, which causes particle shedding
● The material is susceptible to ripping, exposing contaminated footwear
● Can cause feet to slip, endangering safety
● Shoe covers can add to contamination in critical areas, if applied with unwashed hands before entering
These are just a few of the reasons which inspired the University of Toledo in Ohio to get in touch with Dycem at the beginning of the year.
Dycem CZ02 WorkZone was installed in the main entry hall of the university’s research laboratory, with a second area introduced to the hall outside of the campus’ cleanrooms,.
‘Researchers would bring their carts [into the rooms], [but] the wheels had not been adequately cleaned,’ explained the research laboratory’s associate director Merle J Heineke.

Cleanroom Experience’s ‘Cleanroom Expert Days’ continue this year with an excellent line-up of topics.
The Cleanroom Experience showrooms give cleanroom operators in Switzerland and Germany an amazing resource for learning about the construction and daily running of cleanrooms, through permanent exhibition stands and a monthly Expert Days event, packed with talks, live demonstrations and group discussions.
This month’s Expert Day takes place in Wangen an der Aare in Switzerland, and hones in on the design and construction of cleanrooms in life science areas. You can download a flyer for the event here.

As part of Dycem’s commitment to the ISO 9001 standard, we regularly test our products against current strains of bacteria, to make sure that our contamination control solutions continue to perform to the highest ability.
We recently submitted a set of samples containing Biomaster GC100 Antimicrobial Technology for testing, for efficacy confirmation against a number of different organisms.
The samples were tested to ISO 22196:2011 standards, along with a laboratory control sample, and challenged against stock cultures of three organisms; Campylobacter, Listeria and Salmonella.
The process has been illustrated in the diagram below.
The Dycem samples performed very well during the tests, demonstrating a very good efficacy as high as a 99.91% against Salmonella, which has been identified as one of the most common causes of foodborne illness and product recalls in the USA.
The results show that while incorporating Biomaster GC 100, Dycem creates significant reductions in bacteria numbers.

Microbiologist and journalist Dr Tim Sandle has recently published an article about the threat presented by fungal contamination in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
While reports of bacterial contamination dominate the media spectrum, you may be surprised to learn that as much as 21% of pharmaceutical products were recalled between the years of 2000 and 2012, due to fungal incidents.
‘…The contamination risk posed by fungi to pharmaceutical products is greater than the level of industrial and academic interest would suggest,’ argues Tim Sandle, whose article draws attention to the diversity and complexities of fungal contaminants, and warns that multiple industries could be equally at risk.
